Modern gamers expect every success to be handed to them with minimal effort. As long as they can gather up as many achievements with as little effort as possible they are happy. Give them an 80’s - 90’s video game and they panic.
Here’s a perfect example of this within a franchise.
Final Fantasy NES 1987/1990
Difficult enemies. Challenging, innovative design. The game can be played in almost any order. You only get so many clues as to what to do next. YOU must figure out not only your way around dungeons, but your party make up, your weapons and armor preference, your limited inventory, what spells you want, what level to be at, whether or not to class change, and where secret but vital items are.
Final Fantasy XIII PS3 2012 (I think?)
Set number of battles. Mediocre challenge. Straight forward and bland design. Set leveling trees. No map to explore. No dungeons to find. Everything is handed to you on a plate. Your brain can play this on auto pilot. OOH! LOOK AT THE SHINY MOVIES, HURRRRR!
The only parts of XIII that even resemble player input are pointless or essentially a facade.
Superior game: Final Fantasy from 1987.
You also don’t try to think that these people could just be:
1/ Not used to video games
2/ Not really patient
3/ Maybe just young
I know it is really cool for a lot of gamer to think that they came to knew everything, and especially the thing that are the best, in their young age but just… Just shut up.

But here we are, now, a game just take difficulty to take a LOT of close minded gamer to the award of “Best game”.
Super Meat Boy is a… How can I tell it… It is just a classic game that isn’t good. It is flash that was put as a game and people said” OKAY, IT IS RETRO AND IT IS DIFFICULT SO IT IS GOOOOOD”. No. It is a cheap game with a cheap gameplay who just came to appear interesting because it frustrate you.
I am not saying that taking the player by the hand is better, oh no, but don’t give me this crap difficulty, don’t give me this “OH MY GOD, THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND MYSELF WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD”.
Of course they will less understand retro game since they didn’t lived with it or try video game only sometime.
Next step, we will try to make you understand that even if you played Zelda: ALTTP or Zelda: OoT, it still doesn’t make you a better gamer.
Full step will be to make you all shut your mouth if it is for mocking people, blinding your shitty self avec your arrogance.
I don’t know what a gamer should be, but I know what a gamer shouldn’t do or say, and right now, a ‘REAL’ gamer don’t say shit like that.

I hope that some of you are AWARE that 3 of these 4 character in the bottom are interesting or funny character on their own right?
So OH MY GOD, PEOPLE CHOOSE TO DRAW MAN IN A SHOJO WAY, IT IS HORRIBLE.
None of you opened your damn mouth when it come to woman being sexualized or stupid as fuck in some of this old anime, because hey, who care.
But when you sex symbol of masculinity (Who is VERY caricatural, I love Spike, I love Trigun but if you just analyse them, you see why they are so popular) is being ignored, it is a bad thing.
Lelouch is just a tragic character with a great mind, Code Geass is an excellent anime by itself and summarizing the character of the anime because if is “Shojo like” is beyond stupidity.
Second is L. Everybody know who L is, an excentric genius and THEN because this guy is just a weirdo with a cute look (L is just weird, don’t search any other way to put it, it isn’t offensive to say that), it make him the true real yaoi character… SERIOUSLY?
Fruit Basket is a shojo, I don’t see why the fuck not the artist shouldn’t come with a shojo art style.
And the last… God… If you didn’t watch Ouran High School Host Club, you missed something. This shit just mock EVERYTHING the shojo style has. It is funny, the character are touching (The female character is cute, interesting, funny and not coming with stereotype), it is satyric as hell.
And THIS character is just made to be the “Prince Onii-Sama” style. IT IS THE MEANING OF THEIR CLUB. This guy is like the biggest dumb rich guy in the planet who god sake. He is funny, he is nice, he is clumsy about commoner manner.
He isn’t made here to be a fucking sex symbol but to show that BEHIND the archetype, there is something more interesting.
For god sake, just stop trying to critic some anime because of their design, stop. You are missing the whole fucking point.

This was definitely a large reason (beyond my brother hogging the television and gaming systems) why I stopped playing video games. I used to LOVE them and play as often as I could until around 14 or 15 when shit like this over Xbox Live got too annoying to deal with.
The single reason I don’t play online. Fuck you and your stereotypes.
I tend to play offline games and I’ve always enjoyed them more anyway. When I did play with dudes there was a lot of issues both online and offline. A great thing about playing online was that people often thought I was a dude. I remember one guy realized I was a girl halfway through a match and started apologizing profusely for saying “fuck” and “motherfucker” during the game. I was like “Dude, I WAS DOING THE SAME THING CHILL OUT.” Another guy figured out I was a girl and immediately started saying “You should close your legs I can smell your cunt from here.”
Just, what the fuck. And the thing the guys I knew at the time didn’t get was that this wasn’t trash talk. This shit happened pregame. It wasn’t your usual “HEY DICK YOU GONNA LOSE.” etc.
Playing in person is almost worse because with the guys I was around 1) If I won they would get mad (one of them didn’t and was very cool about it) 2) In matches in brawl and whatnot the game came down to all of them ganging up on me at once, making sure I got taken out of the fight, then finishing the round without me as competition. They never acknowledged this and the one apology I got while one of the guys was drunk was basically a trumped up “Sorry you feel that way.” 3) My gaming skills were constantly questioned and my ex would backseat game and tell me how bad I was at learning game mechanics. It got so bad I stopped playing games with him home.
I’ve been playing games since the Super Nintendo came out but they never wanted to really acknowledge that either. I broke out a game I was good at back in the day. A very simple game called Tetris Attack. I could beat my ex consistently at it. He got so mad that he ended up playing the game on single player for hours trying to figure out how to beat me. In the end I let him win because it was easier than putting up with him constantly requesting a rematch.
Just a little talk about the cross assault polemic.
First off, be aware that Kotaku and many website about e-sport made a generalisation of the fighting game community from this incident when the problematic is not that simple. This is a shameful incident, clearly, but who was made in a polemic not for protesting against the bad condition of woman in video game but simply to make some generalisation in the fighting game community.
I HIGHLY encourage you to read some article/interview by Ultradavid who explained really well why the community has this type of mindset and how it could be improved.
Also, Aries, the man who did the harassment, was severely condamned (Even if some of his friend supported him because Aries is more the type to be the very boring guy who do the same joke again and again, not to say thing because he is sexist. Clearly, he did something dumbl but he never thought he would take this proportion. Of course, it doesn’t give him any excuse for this free harassment) by the FG community and he put properly apologize on twitter.
Also, for the french girl (or the girl who can read french) who are in this topic, you can maybe try the chronic “Pink Ward” on Millenium, a woman who play on LOL explain the current state of women in the competitive scene, in the game and other stuff.
Also, you could also read (even if there is a LOT of shameful comment) the comment on Pink Ward article, you could see how man can sometime see the woman, etc.

Some random opinion about playing a bully
[Before reading, my english is terrible, I know. Throw me the stone. I hope it would be understable]
I know many people won’t see this message, and to be quite frankly, there is nothing interesting about it. I just feel like writing something about a subject that, certainly like many people, I suffered in college and that also fascinate me, the bully.
Well, we see many tumblr (Pony, other fandom or personnal blog) that play a big variety of character, especially when they want to explain to other people how think and feel a character that is different from them.
A good example are the many pony tumblr playing a character who has a default, like smoking, paranoia, fear, cowardice, violence, etc. They use that default and drive a plot with it, then they show that the character is more than just this ‘default’.
If we take the example of Discord Whooves (A pony tumblr showing the doctor as a pony who become a coward and a broken being), they show the character as egoist, coward and possibly violent.
And then, they explain to us how he became like that, they make a relation between him and other tumblr, they make him more ‘human’ by showing different aspect of him. And the people who give him question try, in general, to help him, to understand him. Without exaggeration, it is making us growing a little by learning a point of view.
When I ask a question, since I can’t draw, play music or make good OC rp, I generally play the character of this blog.
And this character is a bully.
We all know that bullying take an incredible form to USA and England, but of course, european country (I am french) also encounter this curse.
Cyber Bullying is even becoming something more and more current. Social media like Facebook or tumblr are used to bully people in different way (Anon who troll/harass moraly personnal blog, humilation on facebook, etc).
So, people will ask ‘What is the interest of playing a Bully?’ because, in general, nobody like a bully.
Is it the Mary Sue feeling? Like you can insult people, make them suffer when you are not strong yourself?
To be honest, I enjoy seeing character (OC, canon, don’t really care) with extreme feeling (like sadness, anger, hatred). But no, because you don’t obligate the people to answer you. It is more like “Hey, I give you a rp insult” and the people can do the “Ignore it”/”Make an answer” choice.
Is it just frustration?
Attacking people because of jealousy? I am frustrated, I won’t play with them no? I would more ignore them or insult them. So it is not the right answer either.
So… What is the answer?
To be quite honest, playing a ‘bully’ (even if the question is stupid, like the point that make the bully is stupid and wrong, it doesn’t matter, the goal is to make a question who look like something a bully will do/say) help me to understand them and is also a good way to sensibilize people about it.
When you see character feeling bad because of the question, or fighting against it, it show to the people how bad it can be, but also what you can think and do against it.
The better way to make people against bullying is empathy, the more emotionnal it become, the more they can feel it and the more they can understand.
By playing something in a caricatural way, you can miss your point. You can’t explain to people how is bullying by playing a character who is only bad and mean.
A bully is a human, like us. He can have many reason (HIS reason, of course) to bully, his antecedent.
I was ‘traumatized’ (It is a big word, but you see what I mean by that, it change me) because I was bullied and what I wanted to know was: “Why, why do they do this?”.
And that is the thing that we tend to forget, because when a boy or a girl suffer of bullying, we should also think “What can make a person bully an other”.
It can be the group, it can be simply because they don’t realize how horrible they act (They don’t see their responsability) and it can also be because they have been bullied too, because they have a lack of self esteem.
I am not into religion, and I don’t say to forgive anything. Punition must be taken when someone hurt the right and integrity of an other. They have no right to do that. But if you ‘save’ someone of bullying for beating and treating an other like a monster, you certainly miss the point.
The thing that I ‘understand’ (I am not making a statement, just saying what I think is an answer) after I made all this question in the single goal of hurting/dominating/crushing people is that Bully have one thing.
Insecurity.
It can be about being loved, about being helpless, about being alone, about being accepted, about being something ‘good’.
I think bully are people with no empathy… Or who live with fear.
What I want to do by playing a bully is understand them for forgiving them.
I still have bad habit because of the fear I have of other, but I have a good life, I try my best and I am not feeling full of anger because of them.
I have the regrets that their life, their choice (And sometime their basic mindset, I am not saying all bully can’t be some horrible bastard) stop us from being friend or, at least, just being neutral about each other
What I want to do by having the chance to seeing some artist answering my question is the power of their talent to show to other people sometime the distress of people who are bullied, and sometime their answer, their strenght to overcome it.
If by simply playing a bully, I can achieve these two goal, I would be the most happy man of the planet.
Bullying is a horrible thing, nobody should do it, nobody should suffer from it.
But I know the best way to help people who had, have or would have the same problem as me, as many of you may have live, is to talk about it, to show them the possible consequence and the possible solution.
That is all, I just wanted to explain, even if nobody care or/and nobody will read this, why I play a ‘bully’, and also what I think of this subject.
